Five Workflows Every Team Should Automate First

Not every workflow is worth automating. The best first ones are frequent, predictable, and a little annoying. Here are five that engineering and ops teams tend to get value from quickly.

Tell people, don't make them ask

Two workflows pay off almost immediately: deploy notifications that post results to your team channel, and a weekly release digest that summarizes what shipped. Nobody has to chase an update, and everyone stays informed.

Start with the work you resent doing, not the work that sounds impressive.

Respond faster to incidents

When a deploy fails, minutes matter. Automate the first response: open an incident, post in the right channel with the failing commit and author, and notify whoever is on call. Your team starts fixing instead of coordinating.

Keep humans in the loop

Two more worth automating: the on-call handoff, which sends the next engineer a summary of open issues, and approvals, which route a request to the right person and record the decision. Automate the routing, keep the judgment human.
