Company
Shard has been remote-first since day one. That choice shapes how our engineers communicate, make decisions, and cover on-call for a service people rely on. Here's what working together, from anywhere, really looks like for us.
Writing things down
In a remote team, clear writing is the great equalizer. Decisions, designs, and incident reviews live in shared documents, not in someone's head or a private chat. It keeps everyone aligned across time zones and makes it easy for new teammates to get up to speed.
Good remote work is mostly good writing.
Fair, humane on-call
Automation does a lot of the heavy lifting here. Alerts go to the right person with the context they need, handoffs include a summary, and incidents get a written follow-up. Fewer pages and clearer ones mean on-call is something people can sustain.
Staying connected
Distance shouldn't mean disconnection. We make space for casual conversation, celebrate launches together, and get on a call when a topic needs more than text. Connection is something we build on purpose, not something that just happens.
